La Vie En Rose

Oigo?

“Oigo?”

The first word my Cuban grandmother always used to welcome the caller on the other side of the line. This piece is inspired by Cuba’s technological advancements before the Revolution with a bracelet made to look like a coiled telephone cord.  As the Revolution approached, I imagined by Grandmother constantly answering the phone speaking to family as they were informing each other of the latest happenings in Havana.   Each, “Oigo?” brought tears and heartache as the news boar no hope. The communist revolutionaries were changing  the atmosphere of  Cuba. A Cuba, here father, a passionate fighter for Cuba’s independence from Spain at the tender age of 13, Rafael Cerviño y Reytor, would now fall into the grips of what he and his family despised most: opportunity and faith being taken away from them and all future generations, now including his granddaughters. The Revolution stalled any further technological advancements once it sunk its bite into the island; devouring any further progress and leaving the island stuck in time.
